## Transcript

Here's a little tidbit about me. I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. And I ended up getting a double mastectomy. [ NOISE ] Before I even knew it I had a special, right after my surgery I knew I wanted to take my shirt off on stage. And it was kind of in reaction to Not being comfortable or okay with my body. And I thought it was just this outrageous idea. And want to take it out on the road and was torn all the time. It kept running through my head and then it surfaced where I was like I'm gonna take my shirt off and just see how this goes. Good evening, hello! [ APPLAUSE ]. I have cancer.

How are you? It was really just part of the process of coming to terms with what my life was and becoming comfortable with my body again. And realizing that, of course, cancer is A big thing. It's a big deal. But finally, realizing that having scars across my chest. There shouldn't be taboo around that, because it's my skin, and my body, and that healed and that should actually just be a positive thing. I made so many jokes over the years. About how flat chested I was, my boobs over heard me. And it's just like we are sick of this. Let's kill her. Men, women, cancer, no cancer. Come up after saying my head exploded when your shirt came off.

Who's taking this really bad? [ LAUGH ] Oh, it's okay. [ LAUGH ] It's okay. I remember trying to get representation and back when I sent out VHS tapes and usually you just get no phone call. When you're denied. But this one manager called me and turned me down for an hour on the phone. Telling me that I was funny but that I was too low key and dry. [ LAUGH ] My fiance. [ APPLAUSE ] He is from. Medium Tig Nataro, welcome her. [ APPLAUSE ] I remember when I was talking to Ira Glass before I did my Taylor Dame story on This American Life. He was like, " oh, I love the story but I don't know if it's right for radio because you do so many little movements and facial expressions that I think people need to see ".

He looked at this table, and then he looked back at me [ LAUGH ] Then he looked back at the table. [ LAUGH ] And I was like- [ LAUGH ] Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, of course she's here. [ LAUGH ] It's funny cuz I very much stood up and said I think you're wrong. I said I feel like my experience listening to comedy albums as a kid and growing up I just listen to the audio and even if their making a physical movement or face expression that I can't see, your brain makes up what ever you want it to be. So I walked up to Taylor Dayne's table [ LAUGH ] and I said, Excuse me. [ LAUGH ] I think that's what's so awesome is that you get to use your imagination of what the person's talking about.

I just have to tell you. [ LAUGH ] I love your voice. [ LAUGH ] And she said, [ MUSIC ] Thank you. [ LAUGH ] When the Taylor Dayne bit was on This American Life, Ira came up and was like, I was so wrong. I was so wrong. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
