## Transcript

Identify theft is becoming more and more of a problem this year and years going forward. The three areas that we focused on here were credit cards, spam email, and tax refund fraud. So credit card fraud is nothing new and that's way you are seeing all the chips on your credit card. The problem for that is that other countries that have implemented the system have seen a major spike And online fraud. So be prepared to have your credit card hacked online. That's pretty scary. But the good thing is that credit card fraud is relatively painless. Generally, your credit card company will know before you and they'll contact you.

They'll cut that card off and send you a new one. What you really have to worry about is people signing up for a credit card in your name Name, and using that to sign up for a card and opening up a line of credit that you are not responsible for. So one thing that you can do is sign up for a 90 day fraud alert. You can do it with one of the three credit agencies. And what that does is it lets you know if anyone is applying for credit in your name. So spamming is getting more sophisticated. As more of your information is out there, scammers And hackers can buy your information illegally, if they can just go to your social media accounts and see who you are, where you live, they can use that information to send you more targeted e- mails.

Don't click on anything asking for your information, whether it's from the IRS or a retailer. The only way that you should give information to an organization Is if you contact them first. Another thing to do is to look for simple typographical errors. Spammers have gotten a lot more sophisticated, but they're still apt to make a mistake or two. Read something carefully, and if it looks like something that is legitimate, don't look at the email. Don't click on the link. Contact customer service for your bank or your credit card or even your social media outlet. So, because of all these hacks at health care providers, you can buy someone's identifiable information online for really cheap.

There's just a deluge of information out there. The government estimates that this type of fraud is going to explode over the next couple of years. What makes this a lot more concerning And credit card fraud is that there's not a whole lot you can do about it. If someone has your information and they go after your tax refund, they'll just get it. What you can do is you can try and file early. You can also try and setup with your withholdings so that you're not actually due a refund at the beginning of the year. If you have been hacked, contact the IRS. Fill out a form, and it generally takes 180 days or so for the situation to be resolved.
