## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] We want people to walk in and feel transported and almost in a dream scape of a beautiful utopia in the center of Crowded city. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] I'm Dan Barish, and I'm the cofounder and executive director of The Lowline. The Lowline is a plan to build the world's first underground park here in New York City. The central idea is to collect and harvest enough natural sunlight Above the street, and then direct that light underneath the city sidewalks at an intensity that is strong enough to support plants and trees. This is the first time that anybody has ever really attempted to use these solar techniques.

To deliver enough light to grow this kind of plant life. So, the Lilian lab has been designed in order to help demonstrate and showcase how we plan to bring natural sunlight underground. So, what we did was, we took over this warehouse. We designed and installed this beautiful landscape. That is filled with about 3, 500 plants. A lot of the plants were selected to really have a variety of color and a variety of textures to create this feeling of beautiful urban jungle. You have everything from some pineapples to ferns and mosses What we're doing is actually a very real live laboratory. Every single one of these plants is something that we will be studying and seeing how successfully they grow.

This is directly going to inform how we make decisions about the future [ UNKNOWN ]. The piping of light is really what we're talking about here. And I think already the light levels are higher than we predicted. So it's Very fascinating what distances we might be able to cover with the technology long term. The Deputy Secretary from the US Department of Agriculture actually came to talk to us about the possibility of using a version of this technology To grow food, and even plants, for astronauts in space. I just saw The Martian, and this is part of the same story of really pushing the boundaries of how we cultivate and grow green plants and even edible food.

[ MUSIC ] I think in the future, we need to just think more creatively about how we Use the spaces we have available to use. [ MUSIC ] We live in crowded, dense cities, where we don't have a lot of access to the sky, to trees and plants and fresh food. Every opportunity that we can take to help green our city and help add a little bit of nature is, I think, a step in the right direction. [ MUSIC ]
