[ MUSIC ] Hi, my name is Kim Clark and I'm a senior writer from Money magazine. [ MUSIC ] And I'm Lauren Williams, I'm the features editor Essence magazine. And Lauren, you and I collaborated on a new project for Essence magazine. Tell us about it. So basically we came up with a list called The Best 50 Colleges for African Americans. Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions African American students will make in their lifetime. But when it comes to serving the field to find the right fit It can be difficult to identify those schools that serve us best. So Essence teamed up with Money to create this one of a kind list, best colleges for African Americans.

It's the first list of its kind specifically formatted to address the needs of African Americans based on federal data that Money Magazine compiled for its own best colleges ranking. So it's interesting that the very top schools on our list are really the elite schools that have been historically white. Princeton is number one. Can you talk a little bit about why that is and how the HBC used it? Definitely so Princeton again has made the top list because of the high graduation rate, the highest success of this the black students that do enroll there. We're talking about those graduate earning, we're talking about the amount of debt that they're settled with when they graduate.

At number 5 we have Florida A & M University which does an amazing job. At producing students with STEM degrees. Number 6, we have Spelman College, the oldest black women's college, founded in 1881. Which graduates as many STEM degree holders as universities such as Stanford. And at number 9, we have North Carolina A & T State University, which is the number one producer of black engineers in the nation. We do have a mix of HBCUs but the reason that some of the elite schools have risen to the top has lot to do with affordability. Right, and the earnings that those people make. I mean the fact is, if you have Princeton on your resume, that definitely gets you probably a little more of an interview at a Wall Street firm or a high tech.

Right. Exactly so we account for the impact that these schools have on the alumni once they graduate. So those are some things that came into play but still at five, six and nine we have very strong HBCUs who have been serving our communities for decades and are continuing to do great work. Right and there's lots of other HBCUs on the list, you mentioned Xavier University Louisiana, a terrific school. Hampton of course, Howard. Lots of HPCUs do very well in this analysis. Absolutely.
