These live fire exercises were held over 5 weeks in a remote desert close to the Indian border-- their purpose, to improve Pakistan's ability to repel a ground invasion by its long time enemy to the East, India. This training, for conventional war, rather than counter insurgency, sends a clear message that India and not the Taliban remains Pakistan's primary foe. Although the military has taken on the Taliban in most of its strongholds in the Northwest bordering Afghanistan, it has not gone into the main extremist hub of North Waziristan. That's where the Al- Qaeda leadership and other senior radicals are believed to be hiding. It's also home to terror training camps that turn out recruits ready to kill in Pakistan, Afghanistan and further afield including in New York. Faisal Shahzad the suspect in the botched bombing attempt in Time Square was reportedly trained by extremist in North Waziristan. US Attorney General Eric Holder has said the Pakistani Taliban were behind the plot. >> The Pakistani Taliban has directed this plot. >> Before the attempted attack, US officials had toned down their calls for Pakistan to do more and were understanding of the military's reasons for resisting North Waziristan. Namely, a lack of troops and the need to consolidate gains elsewhere. Even afterwards, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates praise Pakistan's on- going efforts in its war on terror. A fight Islamabad has vowed to continue. But the fact is, the bulk of Pakistan's half a million strong army, remains deployed along the border with India, to counter what it considers a very real and urgent threat. >> We should not remain oblivious of the offensive towards the East which keeps growing over the period of time and there is a very ominous offensive doctrine on the Eastern side, which is Pakistan specific. So therefore, to lure the guard, as seen in light of the emergent threat which is staring right us in the face, but that would be too hard. >> But for how long can the military split its resources and attention? >> I think the signal again is that we are confident. If the Pakistan army is confident, then they can take care of the Taliban front and the India front at the same time. That's the bottom line I think of this. >> That maybe more difficult to do if it turns out the Time Square plot was planned and funded from within Pakistan's tribal belt, because despite the praise from Gates, and Pakistan's statements about extremists, actions, like the shells fired in these military exercises near India, clearly speak louder than words.
