## Transcript

When Hitler's army invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939, TIME led a story with a flat, grim statement: World War II began last week. Reader's protested that it was no such thing. The notion of a Second World War, just 20 years after the first ended, was too much to bear. But that's what TIME continued to call it. And in the weeks that followed, the truth of the name became plain. Listen to the debate right now over Afghanistan, and you'll hear the debate over whether it's Vietnam all over again. Read the early stories about Vietnam, and you hear the president worrying that it's 1939 again. This is what we mean about journalism as the first rough draft of history.

The TimeFrames' project is a chance to see how epic events unfold; what is instantly clear, what only comes into focus when we look back through time. History doesn't repeat itself, Mark Twain said, but it does rhyme. And if you only know today's line and not the whole verse, you can easily miss the meaning. The US is locked in commercial battle with China. But that battle is a long tale of revolution and rivalry. We've watched the worst oil spill in US history and wondered what the impact will be. You'll have a much better idea if you know what happened and what didn't happen after the Three Mile Island nuclear accident or the Exxon Valdez ran aground.

A story in 1941 described a marvelous velvety green mold, distantly related to cheese, that stopped the growth of bacteria with a power greater than that of the most powerful antiseptics known. Thus was born penicillin. And 60 years later, researchers worry we've so overused antibiotics, we are creating a generation of superbugs. We are living in a time when news travels so fast you can't grasp what matters most. Some issues just demand more time. In these pages, TIME's reporters have chosen among the top stories we are covering right now, and created links reaching back to TIME's founding in 1923.

Stories of war and peace, boom and bust, fad, fashions, crimes, follies, and all the characters, great and wicked who drive the stories of the day. TIME. com brings you news as it happens. TimeFrames lets you understand where it came from. Happy hunting.
