## Transcript

A 16 hour standoff that ended Tuesday in Sidney, Australia resulted in the deaths of two hostages and injury of a few others. We can see some heavily armed policemen and. Flashes of gunfire. The gunman behind the Sydney siege is Man Haron Monis, who was also killed in the shootout. And while Monis was not affiliated with any terror group, he did have a criminal record. Monis, who was born in Iran, first gained notoriety in 2009 for sending insensitive and offensive. Fensive letters, to both parents of Australians killed by extremists, and the families of Australian soldiers killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan.

Along with being convicted for writing and sending those letters, Monis also faced charges for sexual assault, and being an accessory to the murder of his ex- wife. He should have been hanged, long time ago. But you're innocent until proven guilty. According to the Sydney Morning Harold, Monis dubbed himself a spiritual healer, and was charged with more then 50 allegations of sexual assault in October. With many claiming his used his self- proclaimed position. To sexually assault women. This extensive criminal record has led some to ask why Monas wasn't being monitored more closely by local officials.

How can someone who has had such a long and checkered history not be on the. Appropriate watch lists. According to his own website, Monas compared himself to WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, claiming the charges against him were made up by the Australian government to keep him silent. At the time of the siege, Monas had been out on bail since December of last year.
