## Transcript

Today on Dumb Money, what are NASDAQ, Dow, and S & P 500? And why do people freak out over them? I'm here to answer the money questions you think are too silly, stupid, or scary to ask. I'm Taylor Tepper, and this is Dumb Money. [ NOISE ] Okay, second question first. People freak out over these names, because people tend to freak out over things having to do with their money. [ SOUND ] Money. [ SOUND ] [ LAUGH ] Now the first question. The NASDAQ, the DOW, the S & P 500, they're all just ways to see how well publicly traded stocks are doing over any particular time. They're called stock indexes, and they all view the stocks slightly differently.

[ MUSIC ] Differently. These indexes measure the performance of a group of stocks that are considered reflective of the product economy and market. So, NASDAQ has more than 3m, 000 stocks listed and is known for featuring big names like Microsoft and Biotech companies. The Dow includes 30 huge stocks, like Apple, and was created about 120 years ago. Standard and Poor's 500 Index is composed of 500 of the largest companies that trade in The US. Of these three indexes, the S & P 500 is considered to be the best representation of The US stock market as a whole. But here's a tip, don't get caught up with in the day to day or minute to minute moves of big indexes or the stocks they sit on.

Over the long haul, stocks general go up. [ MUSIC ]
