## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] My name is Stephen Ferry, I'm a photo journalist and I've spent the last ten years documenting the internal armed conflict in Colombia. The title, Violentology, is a reference to the Violentologists, which is how the Colombians call, a brilliant school of historians have studied the political violence in their country. The conflict is, is very complex. There are different [ UNKNOWN ], the 2 gorillas, armies that are fighting the government, government security forces that are backed by the United States. And then a range of paramilitary groups on the right, and also criminal gangs that participate.

The cover photograph was taken, actually, in 1954 by an, an anonymous photographer. And it was used as evidence to denounce the atrocities taking place in the Colombian countryside at that time. [ MUSIC ] The main gorilla force that has been fighting the government for almost 50 years now is the FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia. And they're a very tough. Often brutal insurgency. They also traffic in cocaine as a way of financing their struggle. And they claim to be fighting on behalf of, for and on behalf of the peasants. [ SOUND ] The FARC and the other gorilla organization called the ELN, or National Liberation Army often attack the infrastructure of the country particularly the oil sector.

And that's one of the reasons that, it's a weak spot for the state because these two gorilla groups have been very effective at, at this kind of sabotage. And it hurts the Colombian economy and it hurts Colombia's plans to become a world Class oil exporter. [ MUSIC ] There's another chapter which talks about the paramilitary movement, and drug traffickers in the early 1980's and state security forces organize these paramilitary groups. The first one was called Death to Kidnappers, and then they kind of. Grew into this gigantic Frankenstein. They are responsible for tremendous atrocities against the, against the civilian population.

They practiced forced disappearance, dismemberment of the bodies, and also the forced displacement of persons. I want to focus particularly on the role of civilians who stand up for their rights and who oppose these different violent groups through peaceful means. Indigenous people of Colombia probably bear the brunt of the conflict, but they're also the most organized. And there's a chapter about how the traditional indigenous groups of the Sierra Nevada organized to oppose violence both by the gorillas, by the state, and also by paramilitaries. The last chapter of the book focuses on the phenomenon of the death threat.

Columbia, appears to the outside world to, to have improved greatly in, in human rights terms and, and in some ways there, there is improvement. But many of these groups continue to dominate the population in large areas of the country, they're just more discreet about it nowadays and they don't mask or As they were five or ten years ago. What they do, do is threaten peoples lives and so I'm looking at trade unionists, human rights defenders, journalists, peasant leaders who continue to fight for. More peaceful society even though they live under this terrible threat of death. [ MUSIC ] Hope that this work is useful, I hope that it explains as much as it's possible who the different players are what their ideologies are whats [ MUSIC ] What's really at stake in this war.
