On Wednesday, Bill gates faced Congress over his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in a closed door. Transcribed testimony. Glad to be here voluntarily to testify to help with the committee's work. Here's what we know about Epstein and Gates's relationship. In one minute. Gates was a number of high profile people named in the Justice Department's recently released Epstein Files and subsequently interviewed by the House Oversight Committee. According to the New York Times, gates first met Epstein in January 2011 at Epstein's home on the Upper East Side, three years after disgraced financier pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor.

The two kept in contact for about three years. Gates has said the communication was about philanthropic matters that didn't end up panning out with his foundation. Yet the files do include several allegations and messages that appear to be intended for gates, but were never sent to him, he says. One such email alleges that gates was attempting to cover up an extramarital affair, and was trying to secure antibiotics to secretly give to his then wife. Gates has said the allegations are false and gates has denied any criminal wrongdoing and has apologized for associating with Epstein. A spokesperson for gates has said that he welcomes the opportunity to speak to Congress, and the full transcript is anticipated to be published on the House Oversight Committees website after the proceedings.
