## Transcript

A U. S. Navy sailor is dead, and the largest naval base in the world goes on lockdown overnight Monday. Officials say a suspect shot the sailor before security forces gunned him down. A civilian and a sailor killed aboard the USS Mahan, and it's unclear how this civilian had access to a gun. While the captain in Naval Station Norfolk initially told reporters it was unclear how the suspect got a weapon, the Navy released a statement late Tuesday morning saying the man disarmed a petty officer on security detail, and then shot a sailor trying to help in the struggle. He also told reporters the suspect had authorization to be on the base but didn't clarify whether the man had permission to be on the ship.

As the sun rose Tuesday, WAVY's helicopter showed the USS Mahan still surrounded by police cars. The base itself was only locked down for 45 minutes. A reporter for WVEC also noted Pier 1 where the USS Mahan is docked remains a crime scene. The rest of the base is back to normal operations. It was only six months ago, Aaron Alexis a contractor and former Navy reservist killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard about 200 miles to the North. Fox News reports Mahan has been back in dock for about six months after it was positioned in the Mediterranean Sea for a potential strike against Syria, and Naval Station Norfolk held an active shooter drill just last month.

As of mid morning Tuesday, Navy officials hadn't identified either the sailor or the civilian suspect. Thanks for watching, I'm Jamal Andress.
