It was kinda like being in a relationship with Hollywood. And it just didn't feel like we were both in the same place at the same time. I wanted, I wanted something that they didn't wanna give me. And so I took, so I, you know, I took a break from, from my relationship. We all do things to survive. Mr. Chandler. [ MUSIC ]. I had a a, kind of a harrowing experience working on Black Hawk Down in the slum in Morocco called Siti Musa. Where, like, a kid would lose a limb. They'd like, someone would hurt them when they were young, so that they would be better beggars. They would make more money. Seeing stuff like that really made me question what I was, what I was doing for a living. [ CROSSTALK ]. Time away gives you perspective, and time away from any job gives you perspective. You're in it on a daily basis, and you start to believe that that's the world. That the world revolves around what you're doing. It is kind of a relief to realise that it's a choice that you make. To make, this world such a big deal to you. And I love film. But I didn't think, that, just because I wanted to be a part of the narrative, I would be more interesting to people. Growing up in the mid west, and being in, in [ UNKNOWN ] with other people's stories on film, I guess I never really thought that Josh was that great a story. How long is America going to pretend the world is not in war? There were a number of films that I was talking to big directors about, that were really, I think some of the highest 10 films that were gonna be made at that time, and some things just didn't work out. A couple of directors, decided not to do this movie. [ NOISE ]. I have also had some troubles with independent film not getting the release I hope they'd get, when you work really hard on something you really want somebody to see it, you know. Ultimately, you want that kind of feeling of being part of a social dialog or cultural dialog and it doesn't happen because the numbers just don't work for, for the distributors. It, it's difficult. She'll have another one. [ COUGH ] Actually make it two. I've been doing films over the last few years that I'm really proud of, that are independent films that with directors who I think are really fantastic. Gangbusters. A cowboy in a world without guns. Bunraku was a lot of fun. We really enjoyed, and I was doing, I, I got to do all my own stunts on that. I loved doing Lucky Number Slevin of course. Am I being mugged? That is how these affairs begin. [ MUSIC ] Last year I did a film called Parts per Billion which I really enjoyed. Tiny film, new film maker. I know that if I, I do one or two more films in the system, or just play the game a bit more, and pepper my career with films within the system, I'll be able to go off and do these smaller films, and possibly get them the release that they deserve. Hey, how you doing? Is Julie here? [ COUGH ] Is Julie around? Yeah she's in. It's either like I was so disillusioned or afraid or whatever that I ran away that was part of the narrative, or that I, I was some punk who didn't know how good he had it and he just, you know, squandered his you know, his fortune. It, and it's neither of those, it was that I tried to take a different path toward achieving good film, and in the marketplace, it just, the marketplace didn't bear it. And, I'm older now, I'm wiser now.
