The audio quality was murky at best. But the tapes revealed the number of moments in our nation's history. One such moment came on the day that the Supreme Court decided Ro versus Wade, the President expressed his displeasure with the ruling saying that it would lead the promiscuity. But added, there are times when abortion is necessary. I know that, when you have a black and the white. Aside from being offensive, what was particularly jarring was that Nixon assumed that it was obvious, saying " I know that ." To him the statement was black and white. The phrase " black and white" can be used to express a need for clarity like, I wanna see that in black and white. But it can also be used to express an inability to see things in more than one way. Some things appeared to be black and white at first, for example, when I read the title of this article: Is an ugly baby harder to love? I thought, of course, an ugly baby is harder to love unless it's so ugly that it starts to get cute again like a pug or Ugly Betty. Politicians often see the world in black and white, which can be a good thing if it means that they're straight- forward. For example, Zambian President Rupiah Banda recently said, " You have urinated on my jacket" to a monkey, which had just urinated on his jacket. That is a press conference, straight- forward, no spin. Then there's other kind of press conference. South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford went AWOL last week telling a staff that he was gonna clear his mind on the apple- action trail. Sanford was a man who prided himself on seeing the world in black and white, a true physical conservative who strongly believe that " there are moral absolutes ". All of that made his return a bit weird when it was revealed that he was actually in Argentina and he was met in the airport by reporters that had transcript of e- mails that he wrote to his Argentine Mistress. The ensuing press conference was 18 minutes long and not so black and white. I've taken the liberty of editing it down for you. >> To all those things we talked about this morning were true. >> I tried to make as good stand as I could in the battle that was this press conference. >> I talked about adventure trips, told about hiking trips. I talked about dinosaur sheets and, because what I have found in this job is that every word, every moment is recorded and one desperately needs a chaperon. >> All of this makes me think of how the illusion of black and white is use in politics and especially how repressive regimes used in [ unk ] mentality in order to maintain control. I heard it said on the radio that the current protests in Iran probably wouldn't have happened during the Bush years of access of evil versus death to America. That kind of scenario makes it easier for hard learners like Akhmad and [ unk ] to stay in power. Black and white works for the Iranian theocracy.
