[00:08] It is a parade of color and changes and of feelings and experiences [00:15] that unfold very quickly and very spectacularly. [00:26] My name is Rick finder. [00:29] I'm an astronomer and I am the project manager of the American [00:33] Astronomical Society solar eclipse task force. [00:55] So it's important to know that during the total phase of a total [01:00] solar eclipse when the moon is completely blocking the sun's [01:04] bright face and this only happens if you're in the path of totality [01:08] it is perfectly safe to look at the sun without any eye protection [01:12] because the totally Eclipse sun when the sun's outer atmosphere [01:16] the corona shines forth is only about as bright as a full moon. [01:21] So it's just too safe to look at but it any other time during [01:25] the partial phases that precede and follow totality and the entirety [01:29] of a partial solar eclipse, which is all you'll get if you're [01:32] outside the path, you must use some kind of safe I protection [01:37] because the sun even if it's only a thin sliver is so very bright [01:42] that looking at it for more than a second or so is going to [01:45] cause damage to your retina. [01:46] So we recommend that people equip themselves with Eclipse [01:51] viewers. They come as in the form of cardboard. [01:55] Framed eyeglasses or plastic frame eyeglasses also cardboard [02:01] handheld viewers sometimes thick cardboard and they have special [02:06] filters in that are supposed to meet a certain International [02:10] standard called ISO. [02:12] 12312 Dash to You'll often see that number printed on these [02:16] products that if if a product meets that standard them it is perfectly [02:21] safe to use to look directly at the Sun the iso 12312 - [02:27] 2 standard is both a standard of what makes all of you are safe. [02:32] But also what makes us older viewer usable it specifies [02:38] the maximum amount of light that can get through not just in visible [02:42] light also in ultraviolet and also Indian free solar eclipse [02:46] glasses. [02:48] Viewer is at least a thousand times darker than the even the [02:54] dark Brittany sunglasses. [02:55] So if you can see anything through it other than the sun you [03:00] should be concerned what I tell people is look around in the [03:03] house. If you can see things you see detail in the house your [03:07] glasses aren't dark enough if they pass the indoor test take [03:11] them outside. Don't look at the sun. [03:12] Just look at the landscape again, if you can see the landscape [03:17] through the glasses. [03:20] They're not dark enough. [03:22] Now if you passed that test you looked inside the house, [03:26] you looked outside the house and you don't basically anyting [03:29] take a brief glance at the sun on a sunny day. [03:32] Don't wait for April 8th, if the sun looks round and sharp-edged [03:38] and comfortably bright your glasses are almost certainly [03:42] safe. The reason I say almost certainly is because genuinely [03:48] safe eclipse glasses will also block most of the sun's ultraviolet [03:52] and infrared radiation. [03:54] We only see the visible light but there is ultraviolet [03:58] light Moschino can damage your corny is one of the reasons [04:01] we end up with cataracts Too much exposure to solar ultraviolet [04:06] and infrared radiation is heat radiation. [04:09] So the last thing you want to do is cook your rent the last [04:12] thing I want anybody to do if they haven't been able to get their [04:14] hands on eclipse glasses. [04:16] There other solar viewers is to decide if there's no safe way to [04:19] view the eclipse so they have to skip it. [04:21] There are other safe ways to view a solar eclipse the most common [04:26] one is what we call pinhole projection a bit of a misnomer [04:29] because you can use holes that are bigger than the made by a p [04:33] in a very simple pinhole projector is just to take your hands [04:39] and create a little Waffle pattern and then [04:43] Projection is done with the Sun at your back. [04:45] So you put the Sun at your back and you look at the shadow [04:48] of your hands with the CrossFit on the ground and you'll see [04:51] little crescents sons in between the shadows of your fingers. [04:55] Are you created pin holes with your fingers another great pinhole [04:59] projector is a colander from your kitchen or a perforated [05:04] spoon that you would use to strain soup anything with a bunch of [05:08] small holes in it makes a great pinhole projector at the only [05:10] time can heal projection doesn't work is if you happen to be in [05:13] the path of totality during the few minutes when the sun is completely [05:17] blocked by the moon the sun in total eclipse is faint enough [05:22] that it's not going to create a pinhole images through any of [05:26] these projectors that I was describing but during a partial [05:29] face are you can use pinhole projection to see an image of the [05:34] sun. There's no denying that seeing a total solar eclipse [05:37] is a very emotional experience and it's partly because it's [05:42] so beautiful.
