>> Huge plumes of ash, rock, and sand flew high into the air around Mt. Kelud in Indonesia. The volcano on the island of Java spewed ash in the [ unk ] towns and villages as far as 500 kilometers away.

>> According to CNN, the massive eruption took place just 90 minutes after the government raised its eruption alert to the highest level late Thursday night. Indonesia's disaster agency reported the deafening blast sent ash and sand about 10 miles into the air and could be heard up to 125 miles away, but officials announced early Friday morning that Mt. Kelud had stopped erupting and the tens of thousands of people affected started heading home to clean up the volcano's mess. Indonesia is no stranger to disasters like this. The country has dozens of active volcanoes as it sits directly in between the infamous Pacific Ring of Fire and the Alp- Him Belt to the southwest.

The U. S. geological survey considers the area one of the most active seismic regions in the world. In fact, just weeks ago, Mt. Sinabung in North Sumatra unleashed a huge eruption that left more than a dozen dead and several more injured. As of early Friday, rescuers had found two people dead from smoke inhalation and another killed by a collapsing wall. It's unclear how many are injured and if there are any more casualties. Up until Thursday night's eruption, Mt. Kalud had actually been silent for about seven years. Thanks for watching. I'm Lauren Zima.
