## Transcript

>> The project began with my colleague Sebastian Junger when we went to Afghanistan in 2007 to follow a platoon of soldiers on the border of Pakistan. This is the Southern Korengal.

>> The heaviest place on earth the Korengal Valley.

>> We're not ready for this.

>> There was a platoon in a small outpost on the side of a mountain called Outpost Restrepo and we decided to follow our platoon over the course of the platoon in 15 months. We spent 10 months there between this, 5 months each and making film and photographs and count with the idea, pretty simple idea where you go into the valley, you eventually meet all the guys, has a series of off the landscapes and these portraits. The book is also hinge about this idea of tattooing and you know the title of infidel comes from the tattoos that a number of the guys had across their chest. And so there's actually a series in the book where we make graphics out of those tattoos that kind of fits in.

You cannot go into this kind of world of male bonding I guess which is, you know, really a significant part of war and then into the kind of into the more traditional representations of war in terms of fighting, combat in the decisive moment. It's funny as photographers we often are used to thinking about the war machine through images of missiles or tanks, Apache attack helicopters, you know. These things have been presented a lot in the photographic image. And I've come to realize that the war machine is in fact very human. It's very simple. Take a group of young men, train them together, put them outside of a mountain and they will kill and be killed for each other.

That's the war machine and that's really what I wanted to present in the book and it's something that society often tries to in its desire to sanitize war dehumanizes it. It's much more easier to represent war through these kind of inanimate objects or animate when they're fired, but really it's the people behind it that are really the heart of the war machine and when you present these men in their totality not just as aggressors, but also as victims themselves or in some ways there's a soft vulnerability to them then it becomes kind of very interesting examination of war. I mean there's also there's humor and there's tragedy as well.

I mean there's the moments when you know as with the soldiers when their lines were overrun by insurgents and you know staff sergeant Larry Rougle was killed at probably 20 feet, the 2 others were wounded and you know and John Clinard, one of the guys was completely distraught as you would be if you've seen your best friend or somebody killed in front of you. So there's really moving parts to it and I think there's parts are all more moving because there's this great deal of humor and intimacy in the book. War bears a terrible cost both on the civilian population that it's waged that gets caught in and also on the people that waged the war.

And if you notice some on the book I actually left out all the pictures of Afghan people. I wanted the viewer to be really worthy on the standard. This is an examination of the men, the American men that have been waging this war. The book Infidel and the film Restrepo for me says some of the most important things I wanted to say about war and I don't know what else there is to add to that, you know. Of course this is the civilian point of view but about the war machine, about young men, is kind of subject that I've been looking at. You know I think that I've said what I wanna say. If I find something new to say about war then maybe I'll go back.
