For all but the first 2 of its 46 seasons as a team the Mets played at Shea Stadium, a multipurpose venue not tailored to be a ballpark. When architects designed Citi Field they dug into New York's deeper baseball history evoking nostalgia for its once grand ballpark. >> You like the way when you come off the 7th train the way it looks. It looks like an old baseball stadium. >> All the seats down the line are all articulated back to the infield which is another architectural feature. If you go to-- >> Jeff Wilpon and his family are the principal owners of the Mets. He says the architecture of the new ballpark evokes the ballparks of 2 teams that abandoned New York in the late 1950's. The Dodgers' Ebbets Field with its brickwork and rotunda and the Polo Grounds of the Giants with its exposed walkways and iron work. >> We got the first game in here. >> Fans enter the park through the Jackie Robinson rotunda, a tribute to the Brooklyn Dodgers' second baseman who broke baseball's color line in 1948. >> I feel in awe and inspired because I played high school baseball and college baseball with Jackie Robinson. It might not be impossible. >> That's a big open space. It's a welcoming space. We have a number 42 which has been retired by all of major league baseball. Fans have been lining up to take pictures with it reaching back into New York's great baseball history was something that Fred, my dad, and I wanted to do. He wanted very much the rotunda. He remembered going through it as a young kid and we want other kids to remember going through the Jackie Robinson rotunda now saying wow, I remember when I used to go there my dad took me, my grandparents took me. >> Unlike Shea, Citi Field is designed for the baseball fan. >> What we did here was spend the money and the effort on changing the geometry around the ballpark articulating the seats back towards the infield so we give everybody a great view of the game. >> The fan can choose from several eateries, expensive and more expensive and sitting on overhang that juts into fair territory. >> I like the architecture. It allows the park to be successful and allows the fans to connect with it. >> Citi Field has clear improvements over Shea but it's not the only new ballpark in town. The same week the Mets celebrate their new park their crosstown rivals the Yankees are also christening a new stadium. It's the first time in baseball history that 2 teams in the same city and in the same season begin play in a new ballpark, but unlike the Mets ballpark the new Yankees stadium isn't borrowing a legacy. They have their own, the house that Ruth built. And they have a nickname that resonates far beyond their neighborhood, the Bronx Bombers. Citi Field is in Queens right next to where Shea once stood. It's surrounded by highways and parking lots, not Bronx neighborhoods or Brooklyn Brownstones, but the designers and Mets owners see this handsome new park as building a new legacy, writing its own history for decades to come even for the Mets fans who are still nostalgic for old Shea. >> I love this. I didn't wanna like it. Shea was a big part of me growing up. I really loved Shea.
