## Transcript

>> To the layman, a Luge run is looks like fast Toboggan run, very fast. But to do it right, Luge requires careful movement and total control over every muscle in your body and the slightest mistake can hurt a lot. To learn how to do it right, I went to Lake Placid to see how 23- year- old Luge athlete, Erin Hamlin, is training for the 2010 Olympics.

>> But before we got started, she told me about her worst crash.

>> I kinda did a barrel roll once and I actually did land back on my sled but it looks pretty gnarly. It looks way worse than it was. The only thing that happened was that my fingernail got ripped off. I mean in general, when people look at us going down track, or see a picture of us-- they don't really think we're doing anything. But really, you're stirring with your shoulders, your feet, and your hands. One of the ways to be good at it is to make it look like you are not doing anything. So, really if someone's looking like they're doing absolutely nothing and going smoothly down the track, they're doing really well.

>> Erin did just that when she won the World Championships in 2009. Becoming the first non- German Luge racer win an international women's competition since 1997.

>> It's, I mean, an honor to be the person to break their streak and, you know, winning at home in front of all my friends and family. And finally now having that awesome race where, you know, your runs were awesome and everything went as perfect as it could go.

>> She hopes to repeat that run next month at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. With a Gold Medal in her sights, Erin has begun an intensive training regimen.

>> Oh, yeah. Now I'm tired.

>> You know, what's a typical kind of day for you when you're doing that kind of body work?

>> Most of our days are spent in the way [ unk ] a normal gym. We do a lot of plyo and agility work with medicine balls or physio balls and agility ladder, stuff like that for quickness in reaction. And other days we're in the weight room, we do a lot of Olympic lifting.

>> Yeah, this is a great sports specific machine for us at Luge. The very first thing we do when that timing is cleared, and start in and move in the same motion like that towards this. So, its basic idea is to really start initiating with the back, wearing the handles it's this, when its finish put the arms. So, the idea is [ unk ] finish. Be explosive as you can, pinch it all the way to the chest.

>> All right, well Erin and the US Luge folks has given me the opportunity of maybe going down this sled. So I'm getting-- I'm prepared for it.

>> And this is a tight outfit. I don't know how they do it. Erin's gonna kinda of position me and push me down as if I were maybe eight years old. Seven years old.

>> Get in there.

>> Okay.

>> How do you feel now?

>> Little nervous, I'll be honest.

>> You know, [ unk ]-- now though.

>> If I don't make it in Luge, you know, given the way I kind of smooth there. Do I have any shot in any other sports, win an Olympic sport?

>> I don't know. Maybe some figure skating.

>> Right, that's what [ unk ]--

>> And try--

>> Why do all the women tell me I should be a figure skater? Now, that you've seen the wrong way, Erin will show us how it's really done. The Germans dominate this sport, but Erin has broken their winning streak once. So who's to say she won't do it again in Vancouver?
