## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Such a common question today. Yes college is worth it. The Center for Education in the Workforce at Georgetown University found that within a couple of years, 65 % of jobs are gonna require some post secondary education. If you are looking at four- year colleges, a bachelor's degree can increase your lifetime earnings by upto $ 500, 000 on an, Average. [ MUSIC ] So of course your grades are going to be important. But what employers really want to know is that you can actually apply what you're learning in the classroom. So, while you should focus on getting good grades, you also want to supplement that with hands- on work.

You want to be able to talk with employers when you go on job interviews about things you've done, actually, with the knowledge that you have. [ MUSIC ] First off, congrats for asking about saving for college. When I talk with parents whose students are headed off to college this fall, that's the number one regret that they have. Is that they wish they'd Saved earlier, they'd save more, or they'd saved anything at all. I'm not a financial advisor so I can't tell you whether personally for you the Penn. Invest 529 is a good idea, but I would send you to savingforcollege. com. They do rate the Penn.

Invest 529 Pretty wild. It gets four out of five caps, or four out of five stars. [ MUSIC ] Very few students pay those sticker prices that you see on college websites. In fact, at private colleges, the average discount is about 50 %. How much you can expect to pay, though, really depends on your family's finances Your grades and, of course, what type of college you want to enroll at. When you look at net prices, that's basically the sticker price minus the average grant, the average overall net price really doesn't tell you that much, so what you're gonna want to do is look at the net price. Broken down by income.

You can find that on college navigator dot com or you can look up the net price calculator at every college in the country and get a more personalized idea of what you might pay. [ MUSIC ] Lots of private colleges award a lot of financial aid. So you're going to wanna look into that and find some generous private colleges as well as some in state public colleges. As some in- state public colleges. Your best bet is probably to apply to a handful so that you can make sure that you get a financial aid package that is doable for you. And of course, don't be afraid to take out some student loans. With all the headlines today, a lot of students that I talk to are nervous Are nervous about being able to pay their student loans back.

But as long as you borrow a responsible amount and go to a good college, you should be fine. A good rule of thumb is that you don't want borrow more than you expect to make in your first year after college. And another good idea is just to stay within the federal student loan system. There are a lot of protections in that system and it caps your borrowing to about $ 35, 000 for your Bachelor's degree. [ MUSIC ]
