You started life as a journalist, like we all are ,-- >> Absolutely. >> but, of course, in Colombia, journalist can become president. That can't happen in the U. S. And back to you, you're recently elected by a record margin. But again, we're so grateful that you could have captured and killed the commander of FARC just the day before you came here. -[ unk ] >> So, tell us about the significance of that and what that means for Colombia and for your presidency. >> This is probably the strongest and most important strike that we have made against the FARC. This guy was sort of a myth. He was a military commander. He was the one who kept the discipline within the organization. What is more important than even striking down a guy with that prestige internally and that control was that we struck the heart of the FARC. We managed to kill the myth, but more important is the information we're going to-- we're going to discover. Our objective is to have peace and I think that's going to happen sooner than later. >> Mr. President, your predecessor had pretty awful relations with his neighbor, Venezuelan President Chavez. I'm just wondering if you could give us your indication of how you think relations with Venezuela will go, what do you think of President Chavez, and what do you think of the whole Latin American left? What's happening in Cuba, for example, this week? >> Well, I had even worse relationship with Chavez than my predecessor. While I was in my campaign, I said, " Listen, I'm gonna have responsibility as a head of state ." The situation between Colombia and Venezuela couldn't be worse. The only worst thing is war-- >> War. >> Right. >> and that was, for me, inconceivable. The word war, in my dictionary, doesn't exist in that respect. So, I said, " Reach out, reach out with a frank attitude and try to normalize relations because, then, the Venezuelan people and the Colombian people will be better off ." And I reached out and he probably answered positively. We had a big team. We were very frank to each other. I told him, " You're not gonna convince me to think like you do and you're not-- I'm not gonna convince you to think like I do. But let's respect our differences and collaborate with our people with benefit. And that's what we're doing. Cuba, I see, going in the path similar to Vietnam. >> You mean, economic liberalization but still tight party control? >> I imagine that something in that direction is what [ unk ] is gonna happen in Cuba. That's what I think Cuba is going to end in a Vietnam type of situation. We are more than willing to help in this process of, a transition that hopefully could be acceptable and positive for everybody. >> Colombia had a complicated relationship with United States' appetite for cocaine, to put it bluntly. >> Yes. >> As you look at American drug policy from afar, do [ unk ] sometimes and wonder whether the United States has got its drug policy correct? >> Well, I will answer that with another question. Can you imagine what I'm going to say to our peasants in Colombia that grow marijuana if the referendum in California is approved? Is there not a tremendous contradiction and paradox? It'd be very difficult for you, the U. S ., to continue saying, " War on drugs is marvelous ," but for my richest state, it's legal to produce and consume. Or if you can explain that to me, then I will bow. >> Thank you so much. >> Yeah, thank you so much. >> Thank you so much, sir. >> No, no.
