## Transcript

If you've had a good year in the stock market, the bad news is, you may be facing big taxable gains in your portfolio. I'm Ellen Stark of Money with year end tax tips. If you've sold a winning investment this year, or even if you've had a big capital gains distribution from one of your. Mutual funds. The easiest way to cut that tax bill is to find a losing stock in your portfolio and sell that. If you compare your long term gains with long term losses you can avoid paying capital gains taxes. And those tax rates run as high as 20 % nowadays for the highest earners. If you have even more losses than you have gains you.

Can write off up to $ 3, 000 against ordinary income. And if you have even more losses you can carry them forward and use them in future years. Don't let tax avoidance get in the way of sound investing. You should sell a stock or a fund only if that's part of your overall investing strategy. Don't just sell it because you have a loss. If you sell a. Money losing stock but then decide it's still a good investment, you can buy it back but you must wait 31 days or else the IRS will disallow your loss. Another way to save on taxes if you have gains in your portfolio is to donate highly appreciated assets to charities.

You get two tax breaks. You won't owe any taxes on your gains. Plus, you can write off the full market value of those stocks as a charitable gift on your tax return. For more financial tips for the new year check out money. com. [ MUSIC ]
