## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] If you're the boss, can you really be friends with people who work for you? It didn't always work so well for Steve Carrell's Michael Scott character on The Office. He's the Governor of California! He is the terminator. That's not helpful. John Cruise. No! Time! God! Does anybody read the paper. But you can make it work as long as you set some boundaries. After all, it's great to have friends in the office. People who say they have close relationships with people they work with say they're more productive and they're happier. They found their job more enjoyable. But when you're friends with people on a different rung of the corporate ladder, it gets a little tricky.

People who work for you may feel that that person has an unfair advantage if you're always grabbing drinks with them or playing golf outside the office. You want to make sure you're accessible to everybody on our team. Communicate regularly. Doesn't hurt to go around the office and ask people how they're doing. And make sure people know that you have an open door policy. Remember, if you're friends with someone it can kind of make it hard to do your job too. Will you be comfortable criticizing someone, what if you have to lay that person off. Make sure that when you do have a friend in the office you set some ground rules.

Don't talk about business outside the office if you can help it and definitely don't talk about other people on your team. And if you have inside information that's not public knowledge yet, don't share that with your friend. But this can be great if you have friends in the office, even if they do report to you. They're gonna feel good about you, and you're gonna set a nice tone for other people in the office. That's great for everybody.
