## Transcript

Today on Dumb Money, is it safe to use an online bank? I'm here to answer the money questions you think are too silly, stupid, or scary to ask. I'm Taylor Tepper, and this is Dumb Money. This is really two questions in one. Are online banks safe places to put your money? Is it safe to go online to conduct your. Transaction or do other bank banking things. The main difference between an online bank and a normal bank is the online bank doesn't have bank branches. That's it. An online bank in the US has to follow the same rules and regulations as all the banks you see when you're walking down the street.

Online banks in the offer better interest in your savings, lower account fees than traditional banks and probably because they don't have to pay for all those branches you're not seeing when you're walking down the street. Ally is a good option for interests and simple bank is a good option for fees. Just make sure whichever online bank you used is FDIC ensured. Use the FDIC's Bankfind Tool to see if yours is. You can Google it. But is online banking itself safe? Yes, since banks are well aware they're a target for hackers they work harder than other businesses to keep your money and their money safe.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't take precautions when you online bank though I feel it. No one will ever know. Make sure your password isn't password or 12345678. Two very popular passwords. Use 2- factor authentication. Don't online bank at a public computer or on a public wi- fi. If you're banking on your phone use your phones data instead of a public wi- fi. It's really very simple. And if you ever get an email or text from your bank saying we're changing your passwords. Or your account has been locked up or you better respond immediately and login into this site otherwise horrible things will happen to you right now.

Ignore it. It's someone try to separate you from your money. Don't take the bait. [ MUSIC ]
