## Transcript

>> The sun is setting and Dirty Projectors are just setting up their instruments on a stage with no lights. They're the top building on a showcase that's running long and it's getting dark.

>> Everywhere, everyone looks alive and waiting.

>> But fans don't seem to care if they can't see the band very well. Unlike me, they're not trying to shoot video. They're here to listen.

>> The wind is up, the stars are out, the sun is calm, the light is fading.

>> If this is the first time you've heard of the band Dirty Projectors, it's likely it won't be the last. And this is what they sound like, at least this year.

>> cannibal resource.

>> I've been writing songs as long as I've been, you know, playing an instrument.

>> Dirty Projectors is a product name band leader David Longstreth has been using since before he graduated from Yale University.

>> Project has been my thing for about I guess 5 years or so. I've been making albums as Dirty Projectors. This is the band. -[ unk ]

>> Longstreth's band makes the kind of music that has critics reaching for a thesaurus to find new words for complex, intricate, surprising. -[ unk ].

>> You know, cord changes and, you know, dynamics are, you know, underexploited aspects of music that, I don't know, can convey feelings.

>> And those feelings are often conveyed with a striking vocals.

>> We rehearsed for sort of off and on for a couple of months. You know, we've had a couple of week or something and do, you know, anywhere from 5 to 10 hours in a day.

>> At this South by Southwest showcase in Austin, the band played songs from its new album, Bitte Orca. On several cuts, female vocalists interlocked their voices so well it's hard to tell who's singing what especially in the dark.

>> This kind of- this kind of point thing, you know, she'll be on the B and I'll be off a bit and so it kinda just- it was like this.

>> The sequence of notes basically bounce off of each other, makes it a bit- a nice computer effect. It's like you're hearing from people so- People react really well to those parts. I think, you know, anything that's different or standing out, I think people are really getting into so-

>> When, you know, you go on tour and the music really becomes a different thing when you're communicating every night. It takes on like a sort of visceral, you know, like a really physical aspect which is cool.

>> The songs on Bitte Orca range from semi- dance and experimental to airy- pop. Some of the lyrics are a pastiche of pop clichés.

>> Geranium kisser, skin like silk and face like glass.

>> After all that we've been through, I know we'll make it after the wait. The question is a truth. There is...

>> The first single from the album, Stillness is the Move, is in the pop category with vocals by Amber Coffman. It borrows lines from German director Wim Wenders' film Wings of Desire.

>> The still is the move. Isn't life under the sun just a crazy, crazy, crazy dream?

>> It's fun also with these new songs because, you know, prior to these South by Southwest shows, we've only played them really a handful of times and there is still a little bit like unproven, you know. I'm going into the set thinking like, " does this make sense at all ?"

>> It is music and it's- you know, when you have people coming back, you know, affirmatively or like-

>> Cool the fire

>> I feel that people are really feeling it. It's exciting for us.

>> Catch me when I lose control.

>> Since the showcase, the band has had some time to nail down the set and they have just began a US Tour headlining some venues as well as opening up for TV or the radio. And it's a safe bet most of the stages they play will have lights, so if you go hear them, you'll most likely see them too. For time. com, this is Craig Duff.
