[ CROSSTALK ] Experts, estimate, that, a cumulative total, of about 108 billion people, have lived on Earth. [ SOUND ] Which means, that about 6. 5 %, of all humans ever born. Are, alive today. A massive, [ UNKNOWN ] considering homo sapiens, first appeared, around 50, 000 BC. The worlds population, reached the 1 billionth mark, in 1804 and it took 123 years, to add a billion more, that number, doubled by 1974. [ MUSIC ] Earth, hit the 5 billion mark in 1987, and in the 24 years since, we've added 2 billion people. [ MUSIC ] The population, is projected to hit 9 billion, in 2043. [ MUSIC ] Throughout history, economists, demographers, scientists and politicians. Have fretted, over our finite world's ability, to sustain, humanity, as it grows. But, [ CROSSTALK ] the world is not in fact bursting, at the seams, and we likely do have the resources, to sustain, a population of 7 billion. [ SOUND ] The challenges, of the expanding human population, lie not so much in curbing growth, Isn't addressing inequity, around the globe. [ SOUND ] Massive growth in population, is being fueled, by high fertility in poorer regions; especially in Africa, where Niger, has the highest fertility rate, 7. 2 children per woman. [ MUSIC ] Richer countries, have a much lower rate, with the lowest, in Bosnia [ UNKNOWN ] with only 1. 2 children, per woman. [ MUSIC ] We're each of us unique, of course, but here are the most average, of our 7 billion, brothers and sisters. Nearly a fifth of us, are Chinese. [ MUSIC ] A, third, are Christian. [ MUSIC ] A, little over half, 50. 4 %, are male, 50. 5 %, live in a city or a town. The median age, of an Earthling, is 29 years old. [ MUSIC ] Whose, average wage, is about 10, 290 bucks a year. And, unlike you watching us now, 73 % of the world, does not use the internet. [ MUSIC ] And, if you were to cram everyone, on the planet, into one place, with roughly the population density of New York City, that would be quite, a big town, as big as Texas, as a matter of fact.
