## Transcript

Great Train Robber, Ronnie Biggs, one of the men who helped carry out one of the biggest heist in British history has died at the age of 84. According to Biggs' close family and friends, the infamous criminal died in a London nursing home, early Wednesday. The immediate cause of his death hasn't been confirmed but Biggs had suffered a series of strokes and other illnesses over the years that eventually took his ability to speak and walk. Biggs went from a petty thief to one of the most wanted criminals in the UK after one fateful day in 1963, when he and 14 other men hold up a night train travelling from Glasgow to London and stole £ 2.

5 million. It was a record robbery at that time and that much money would amount to around $ 65 million today. But the thieves' victory was short- lived; police busted most of the group including Biggs after officials found their fingerprints in an old farmhouse where they hid after the heist. Biggs was sentenced to 30 years behind bars for his role in the crime. But he wasn't there for long. After serving only 15 months, he scaled the prison's wall using a rope ladder and made a run for it. Biggs spent the next 36 years as a fugitive overseas, mostly in Australia and Brazil. Police didn't manage to track him down a few years after his escape.

But they had trouble getting him back in the UK because he'd fathered a son, Michael, in Rio by the time he was found. Because he had family there, officials in Rio denied Britain's request to have him extradited. The infamous fugitive continued to live his life on the run until his health started to deteriorate in the late 1990's. In 2001, he returned to Britain to face his crimes and was immediately sent to a high security prison. But a few years after that, he was granted parole on compassionate grounds because of his serious health problems and moved into a nursing home. Even though Biggs' life of crime led to book deals, documentaries, and even an appearance in the Sex Pistol song, he had expressed regret for the robbery that made him one of the most notorious criminals, the world has ever known.

The BBC plans to air two movies about the robbery, Wednesday and Thursday despite Biggs' death. The network says neither of the films focused on Biggs. For Time, I'm Megan Murphy.
