Secretariat has opened a 22- length lead. He is going to be the Triple Crown winner. If California Chrome can win the Belmont Stakes this Saturday, he'll accomplish a feat not seen in horse racing in nearly 40 years, winning the Triple Crown. So just what is the Triple Crown? Here's what you need to know. The American Triple Crown is a series of three thoroughbred horse races, for three- year- old colts: The Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes, which take place each spring within a five week period. Being the first horse around the track in all three races means taking the coveted title, but that's no small feat.

Since America's first Triple Crown winner, Sir Barton, in 1919, only ten horses have won the honor, and their names are some of the most recognizable horse monikers since Mr. Ed. Hello, I'm Mr. Ed. While no horse has won the Triple Crown since 1978, there have been close calls. 22 horses have won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, only to lose in the Belmont Stakes. Why is that? The Kentucky Derby and Preakness are both shorter races, at one and a quarter, and one and 3 16th miles, respectively. The Belmont is one and a half miles, and that last quarter mile is where many of the front- runners falter.

Birdstone surges past. Birdstone wins the Belmont Stakes. This year, all eyes are on California Chrome, who has a shot at the Triple Crown after winning the Derby and the Preakness. The Californian colt has been cleared to wear his customary nasal strips, which the Belmont has famously frowned upon. So look for California Chrome to win the Triple Crown by a nose, or not.
