## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] [ NOISE ] This transition for me is, its the beginning of my life. I feel I'm starting right now, like most people start when they go off to college, I feel like this is my college I'm leaving big daddy army. I'm scared. I'm excited but the feat takes over. I was deployed in Afghanistan. I worked in Intel. Sometimes I'd go to the clinic and you'd see these children like, missing limbs, burned. We did do a lot of good things over there but it's helpless. The new person is gonna be Jennifer. No, staff sergeant, just Jennifer. [ NOISE ] I love the gym. It's my passion. [ NOISE ] God man, seeing these guys sweating, wearing their straps.

Pullin, gruntin, don't you love that? There were a lot of the body- builders in the army, and I learned so much from them. I decided I wanted to do that the rest of my life. It was a Kentucky derby bodybuilding competition, and this is actually one I won. [ LAUGH ] When you walk down the street and you have big arms people aren't gonna mess with you, ya know. In the Army you're not a man but you better act like one. Even though you're scared. Even though you're worried. Your eggs will run out. That why I got into body building. It feels good to be a woman. A strong woman. Because you know, in the Army you're a female soldier but I am a woman.

[ UNKNOWN ] [ MUSIC ] Coming from the military where they tell you where to be, what to put on, how to act. To me to jump out of my safety net into this whole civilian thing, I feel like I have no purpose. Getting a job Having the dignity of a job, That gives a person purpose. Today I say goodbye to the army. I decided that I just have to let go. The recruiting station is the beginning and the end. Who's up here? I joined the army when I was 17. I was so young. I thought it was a lot of fun. Best thing I every did was join the Army. I'm never going to change that. Ever. Ever. Sit. No ma'am. Sit.

When i first got home from Afghanistan. I was so excited, but it was bittersweet for me because my mom she doesn't have a car or anything so she couldn't drive down there and my father couldn't make it. Nobody could really make it. I got off the plane. There was no one there for me. Took him home to be alone. Who are you gonna talk to? [ FOREIGN ] One, two, three. Being alone you can't compare to having family with you. Love. You feel that every day like you don't feel love through a phone. [ SOUND ] In the Army I knew what I was gonna do every single day, down to like, dinner [ SOUND ] [ LAUGH ] and I, I kind of miss that.

Monday through Friday I wake up at 3: 30 in the morning. Hey, Greg, how many facings do you want for the cooler? I'm an associate in the Merchandise Execution Team. We pretty much make the story look pretty and we showcase different products. I'm busy constantly. Like, my mind is not worried about, you know, how much money I'm winning and how much. Where my family is, how my husband is doing. My mind is like which of these [ INAUDIBLE ] where I've put in here. You know like. Getting my bachelors oh man. That would just be awesome. What an achievement. You know, my parents I don't even think they made it past elementary you know.

[ LAUGH ] [ NOISE ] We're at day zero. Tomorrow, Jennifer, it's day one.
