## Transcript

Federal authorities arrested Conrad Alvin Barrett in Texas Thursday for allegedly filming himself sucker punching an elderly African- American man. According to Houston area police, Barrett took the video with his cellphone and the video he reportedly asks, " If I were to hit a black person, would this be nationally televised ?" Barrett was charged at the federal level with 1 count of violating the Matthew Shephard and James Byrd, Jr ., Hate Crimes Prevention Act. The federal complaints says Barrett committed the attack because of the man's race and color. So called knockout game incidents have been heavily reported.

There's debate over whether the game is truly the trend it's reported to be, but Barrett's federal hate crime charge adds a new level of controversy. This is the first federal hate crime charge in a knockout game style attack, and critics say it's because the assailant was white and the victim was black. The Washington Times for example writes the Obama administration chose a case in which the person accused is white even though most other cases reported in the news have involved black assailants. But there are no official statistics from law enforcement authorities to back up those claims. In a victim of one assault popularly dubbed the knockout game attack told the Huffington Post he feels like he's being exploited to push a fabricated trend.
