Time to give your pooch an extra treat. August 26th is national dog day. It's an entire day dedicated to celebrating man's best friend, as well as raising awareness for all the dogs that are waiting to be adopted from animal shelters. National Dog day has been celebrated since 2004, according to its website. The day was started by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert, who has also created National Puppy day, National Dress Up Your Pet day, National Specially- Abled Pets day, and National Mutt day. And if you happen to have a black dog, Paige is helping you celebrate him or her again on October 1st, which is her National Black Dog Day.

No word on whether or not holidays for yellow dogs or brown dogs are in the works. Besides adopting a dog, the National Dog Day suggests celebrating by giving your pup a holistic spa treatment. Taking him or her to the beach or painting a portrait of your dog bu, if your pooch is more of a traditional flowers and treats kind of animal you can always order them a dog shaped bouquet from 1- 800- flowers yes that is a real thing.
