## Transcript

There was a strong police presence around Hong Kong's Central Government Complex on Thursday night. And you could feel the tension rippling through the crowd. Midnight was the deadline the students gave for the Chief Executive, Leung Chun- ying, to step down. Police had cordoned off the complex in case the students tried to storm in and take over. An officer announces that Leung Chun- Ying would hold a press conference that night. With no speakers or big screens the students stream to listen to his address on their phones. Leung says the students could meet with his deputy Carrie Lam but he would not resign.

It's the first time the chief executive has responded to the student's demands [ NOISE ] Angry at his words, several protesters ran to the highway and tried to block the road, a scuffle ensued. Fearing a police crack down, most of the protesters tried to stop the action. Many held hands to hold back the more radical demonstrators and let the cars pass Student leader Lester Shum warned the crowd not to blockade the word until after the meeting. The highway is one of the main arteries leading into the financial district. Take this, and the protestors have the power to shut down the city. Student leader Joshua Wong pleaded with the crowd to put safety first and be patient.

He demands the government give them a sold timeframe for the meeting. Many protestors didn't accept [ INAUDIBLE ] offer. And I think that's, a big improvement but, that's not enough. That's not what we really want. After the scuffle the atmosphere eased, but hundreds remained outside [ INAUDIBLE ] office. The chief executive may have bought himself some time, but the students won't be bought off so easily.
