[ SOUND ] [ NOISE ] [ SOUND ] [ BLANK_AUDIO ] [ MUSIC ] At the beginning and afla. As I moving into it. I was 21, and 2 children. One was only a few weeks old, and the other one would have been two. Of course I was afraid because it was barely one, and you hear all the stories about Bally one. Any time I've walked through Bally one, you just see gangs of people sitting there on the steps drinking, so I was a bit nervous. I moved from me mother's, I had nothing other than the kids clothes. [ MUSIC ] But I loved it when I moved in. It was like, I made it into a home. It wasn't just a flat anymore. I was turning this place into a home by putting me own personal things in. My personal little this. A guy painted a lovely picture of a horse and carriage on the wall and stairs sticking on the ceiling, [ UNKNOWN ] glow in the dark. It was lovely, cozy, cozy. [ MUSIC ] This was the two girls' room. A set of bunk- beds in room so they were in bunk- beds there in their room. And the next time I had it as a playroom for the children so it was full of all toys. [ MUSIC ] The kids loved this room because it was their room for them to be whoever they wanted to be. [ MUSIC ] The first thing you'd hear was music. Because the children would play violin, would play cello, and we wanted to actually play the viola. The music was always constant. So the sound of music floating through the flat. You'd hear it outside the door. You'd hear it outside the window. So many bad things happened [ INAUDIBLE ] in lovely cozy, it was real home. To it wasn't just a head it was a home. [ SOUND ] So moved in and grand for the first 2 weeks and then you start seeing whats going on in the place [ SOUND ] [ MUSIC ] [ CROSSTALK ] You walk inside your door, and you've got to go down the stairs, and it's just junkies strung from one end to the other, the smell of urine on the stairs. [ MUSIC ] At any second be frightened because kids have to go in and out. There's a lovely playground outside. Gorgeous things in it. But I wouldn't let them go down to it. Unless I went with them. So, my kids were brought up in a locked flat. They weren't allowed outside. He's grounded to protect her. [ SOUND ] [ CROSSTALK ] I met this guy through a friend of mine. Where I was working it was her cousin. He'd hang around outside my job and I'd be coming out of work and he'd be there. And me I thought he was cool. So of course I was interested like he was cool I want to be cool as well. I should have known straightaway like people are saying to me he's a scumbag and I'm like he's all right. When I met him, I already had a daughter. So to me he was great. He was taking on my child. I ended up having another three kids with him. [ SOUND ] He ended up going on drugs and got very abusive towards me and the kids. I tried to get rid of him, I had to get the police so when the police came up to get him out he wouldn't leave. So they really took him up from outside. [ MUSIC ] I remember I had to work three jobs, because he wasn't working he was a lazy ass. Always under labor. Now I was eight months pregnant at this time with our daughter Well, you have to make sure there was money there for my kids. [ SOUND ] This particular day I came home, I went up the stairs and I go into the flat. And I just wanted to go to bed. I walked in and me friend turns on was locked with a key. And I never lock any of my doors. I just have a thing about not locking doors. And I looked in, it was him. And. Another 60 [ INAUDIBLE ] my friend Joan under it all snorting heroin in front of my friend Joan. My kids are no where to be seen. So I says where's the kids? He says I think they're in there. So, I went in and one of them she had locked herself in the bedroom and Joe said want to playground. [ INAUDIBLE ] [ MUSIC ] So I went back up with Joe and I just literally got all of the drugs of me table and I said to [ INAUDIBLE ] you gotta get out of here now. How dear you sit in my home, doing drugs where my children I said. So, I tried to get him to leave cause he wouldn't leave. This is my house. It's not got to do with you. This is my sons in my name. For me and my children He said you're not welcome here. You get out of here now. Because I just got beat around for saying that. We [ UNKNOWN ]. She was seven at the time. She was due to make her holy communion. She sat me down. She sat me down and told me. She says mummy, I remember, she said, walking into your bedroom. She goes, I was three. She says, I wanted a drink. She says, and he was saying he had a knife up to your throat. She says, I didn't know what to do cuz I was afraid, so I just went back to my room and cried me self to sleep. [ MUSIC ] She says, I don't know Madison why you put up with that. [ MUSIC ] [ NOISE ] [ INAUDIBLE ] I stopped a gang of young kids on a stairwell who were sitting there drinking and smoking doing drugs. And I asked him why he's doin' it. What makes you sit here and do that. They says this is boredom. [ SOUND ] [ MUSIC ] This one particular day. He came up. I'm sitting in the flat, and kicked the door in and came in, and straight over gave me a punch in the face. And my daughter she was four at the time, went up in front of him and says, you don't hit my mommy. Well he got her. Picked her up and shoved her from one wall. To the neck, when she fell to the ground, he got her to the neck and I just went hysterical like batting him. I batted him, you can't hit my kids. [ MUSIC ] He eventually went out the flat and came back and set fire to the flat then. [ NOISE ] It was like, I was just sitting there watching teddy with the kids And we heard him banging against the door trying to get in. I said to myself you won't get in because me dad came up and put four locks on the outside of my out door and on the inside like five locks. Then the kids were saying well mommy he's kicking, he's kicking, banging he's gonna get in. He's not going to get in. Don't mind him I said. We're gonna stay here and don't tell you, and just ignore him. I wasn't afraid, you know, I mean I felt sorry for the kids because I was like, God love them, they shouldn't have to hear this. So I'm sitting there and it got quick like, so me daughter says to me I'll go check and see is he gone. I says no, don't do that, just leave. I'll check I said. She went out ahead of me and went down the hall. Mommy, mommy she said he's set the flat on fire she says. There's fire at the door. I ran down to the end of the hall, threw the towel over the fire. So then I had to go and try to get something to lock off me meter box in case he's on her again. [ MUSIC ] Than I went to the phone to ring me ma, to tell her what had happened, and he had cut me phone line off. [ UNKNOWN ] in the flat looking out the window, and I shouted down to some nice, excuse me I said. I says could you call the police for me and ask them to come up, and I gave him the address. They had me I think on speed dial at this stage, the police. [ LAUGH ] [ MUSIC ] They came and told him what had happened, and there nothing they can do. And from that day [ UNKNOWN ] away from him fourteen years. He stills try to contact me believe it or not. [ UNKNOWN ] Some people to say, why does she stay? Not just particularly about me but about women that's in abusive relationships. And I understand why they stay. And I know it's a, it's a big thing of fear, is one of them. Partado, admit to the world that you made a mistake. People say yes, make mistakes and you had four children, what, why three children what, yeah, three children. They weren't all by choice. To all men, I don't mean that it was a mistake, I mean he raped me. [ MUSIC ] My niece died when she was four. She had Hydrocopolis. [ MUSIC ] When she died I realized what it meant to be a mother. [ MUSIC ] She came from Heaven when she died and she shook me and said " Rachel, help my cousin. Get them away from that" She saved my children's lives. [ SOUND ] There's no defense for what he done to me or to my children. Even though it's stupid enough to have never happened to me hapened to me. [ MUSIC ] I was never stupid enough to take drugs. It's really hard when you're surrounded by it because my daughter settled in. If I could nail her into our bedroom, I would nail her into our bedroom. Just do exactly what our parent would done and I'm not gonna have it. I will literally kill meself rather than let you go down that road. I'll get there in the end. I'll make sure she doesn't turn out the way he did. [ MUSIC ] I think even when they take them flats down it's not going to change or help anyone. You knock that building down and building that brand new building there. Same thing will happen inside it unless the community puts a stop to it. Educate yourself is the most important thing. Be a good person. Try stay away from the bad influences in life. Everyone makes mistakes. Learn from your mistakes. Don't just make another one after you've made that mistake. That's it.
