I'm Katie Steinmetz, a reporter for Time. We're here in Charlotte at the Democratic National Convention. On Wednesday night, there were many notable speakers. But, everyone is going to be talking about one for some time to come. That's former president, Bill Clinton, who gave one of the most powerful speeches of his post- presidential career. We believe that we're all in this together is a far better philosophy than you're on your own. [ NOISE ] He came ready to lay it all on the field. He used the credibility built during his time as president for one single purpose. We are here. [ MUSIC ] [ INAUDIBLE ] To nominate a president. [ NOISE ] And I've got one in mind. [ SOUND ] Like many convention speakers, he tried to strike a tone of civility. Saying that he was part of the party who didn't wanna fight. Part of the party that wanted to compromise. Whereas the Republicans were certainly otherwise. [ MUSIC ] Though I often disagree with Republicans, I actually never learned to hate them the way the far right that now controls their party, seems to hate our President and a lot of other Democrats. [ NOISE ] But of course he made attacks of his his own. Bill Clinton's speech was an explicit rebuttal to all of the speeches that had been given the previous week at the Republican National Convention. In Tampa, the Republican argument against the President re- election, was actually pretty simple, pretty snappy, it went something like this. We left him a total mess. He hadn't cleaned it up fast enough so fire him and put us back in. [ LAUGH ] Clinton spent a lot of time defending Obama's big decisions. Such as deciding to bail out the auto industry and spend a lot of his presidency working on health care reform. Individuals and businesses have already gotten more than a billion dollars in refunds from insurance companies because the new law requires 80 % to 85 % of your premium to go to your health care, not profits or promotion. Clinton was careful not to paint a rosy picture while Americans are still struggling. He essentially argued that Obama had taken a pit and built a foundation on top of it, but needed a second term if he was going to build a house. No President, not me, not any of my predecessors, no- one could have fully repaired all the damage that he found in just. Four years. [ NOISE ] And Bill Clinton did it all with his easy, buttery way. Working the crowd into throes, with a series of call and answer questions. Here's another job score. President Obama, plus four and a half million. Congressional Republicans. Zero. That, they were eventually, all chanting along to. [ NOISE ] Here's another job score. Obama $ 250, 000. Romney, zero. On Thursday night, Obama will finally take the stage to accept the nomination. After his vice president Joe Biden speaks. Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton said the president have given extremely moving speeches. Obama's job is going to be finding a way to top them and inspire voters into election booth this November.
