## Transcript

It could be time to rewrite the rewritten record books. Peyton Manning's historic season included the most passing yards ever thrown by an NFL quarterback, we thought. The Denver Broncos quarterback threw enough yards Sunday to make headlines. He has supposedly set the season record for yards passing by a single yard, and then sat for the second half with the record firmly in hand. Perhaps, not so firm. Sports Illustrated and ESPN report one play could erase that one year record.

>> A seven yard pass in the first quarter to Eric Decker appeared to be a lateral which would make it a running play. Manning of course Drew Brees' record by a yard--

>> Sports Illustrated reports the Elias Sports Bureau reviews game tape each week and can alter stats like yards gained or sacks. If the playing question, which appears to show Manning throwing backward from the 49 to the 48 yard line is ruled a lateral, he technically loses the record. Reporters tried to ask Manning about the record after the game, either through a desire to focus on the team and abundance of humility, or perhaps some foresight, Manning punted.

>> What do you think?

>> Yeah, I mean, like I said, it's-- I don't really have much to say about it, the [ unk ], yeah.

>> Well, other people do, Peyton, like the Broncos Beat reporter for the Denver Post who tweeted: taking the record away would be criminal, noting that Manning sat in the second half. He said Manning could have thrown for 500 yards if he wanted. Of course, players care a lot less about walking away with season records if someone else takes the Lombardi trophy home. Manning and the Broncos head into this year's playoffs as the number one seed in the AFC. For TIME, I'm Cliff Judy.
