## Transcript

It's that time of year. Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season and it's going about as well as you might expect. Despite planned protests by workers' rights groups, at least a dozen national chains open their stores as early as six o'clock Thursday night, hoping to avoid the chaotic early morning openings. The deal of most [ unk ] came in Romeoville, Illinois, a police officer got stuck in a car as suspected shoplifter and was dragged through the parking lot of a Kohl's store. A second officer shot at the driver, hitting him in the shoulder. Both the driver and officer were taken to a local hospital with non- life- threatening injuries.

Police aarrested the driver and two additional suspects. Walmart took a heavy dose of the criticism with the # walmartfights, documenting some of the crazier incidents including uniformed security officers handcuffing this woman at an unidentified store after a fight over a TV. And dozens of images posted at social media that don't exactly inspire a whole lot of faith in humanity. This is despite several moves by the big bucks retailer to keep things under control this year including quota systems, distributing wristbands and consulting with crowd control experts. President and CEO, Bill Simon, defended the company, saying this year's Black Friday events were bigger, better, faster, cheaper, and safer than ever.

They certainly were big with the company racking up more than $ 10 million cash register transactions between 6 and 10 Thursday night, but they're definitely not for everyone. A recent Gallup poll found 53 percent of shoppers planned to do their shopping online this year, the highest response since the company began asking the question in 1998. For TIME, I'm Lauren Gores.
