## Transcript

Jammed together in a sporting stadium in Herat, Western Afghanistan, the heaving crowd waits impatiently for their leader. [ NOISE ] Dressed in a white suit, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, known for his style, takes to the stage to the cheers of thousands. A key member of the Mujaheddin against the Soviet occupation back in the 80s, Abdullah was confidant and doctor to the man considered a legend in Afghanistan. Ahmad Shah Massoud, assassinated by the Taliban two days before the 9 / 11 attacks. Abdullah joined President Karzai's government before running against him in 2009, where allegations of voter fraud led him to withdraw in protest.

I'm not pessimistic, but I'm concerned. And what I'm asking from the Afghans, consider this as an election of their own, and to try to make this successful. He believes Karzai wasted what he calls a golden opportunity to improve Afghanistan, and knows the challenges ahead are enormous. Corruption bad governments, has the potential to turn Afghanistan into a complete police state. So it's that critical to deal with it. Regardless of who becomes this countries next president, the overwhelming majority of Afghans, sick and tired of war, simply want peace and stability. But the question remains, can any of the top candidates deliver this?

Or will Afghanistan descend back into anarchy. [ FOREIGN ] One man believes he can deliver peace is the other top candidate Zalmay Rasool. Our vision for Afghanistan is a peaceful Afghanistan that become a country like others, and the world, and the people after suffering the love start to live [ UNKNOWN ]. The 71 year old addressed a rally in the Pantai Valley, the birth place and burial site of Masseute. Masseute's brother is his running mate. And these Afghans believe as a team, they are the winning ticket. [ FOREIGN ] Rasul can fix our country, says this man. If we have security, everything else will prosper.

[ FOREIGN ]. As a recent foreign minister in Karzai's administration, the two men share a long friendship. And while the president has refused to publicly endorse any candidate, it's widely believe Rasul has his support. As the strain between the U. S. and Afghanistan, Dr. Rassul is confident he can mend that critical relationship. Well, you know, between friends and family there are sometime up and down. But I can assure you that fundamental is solid, and you continue to have a very strong relationship with United States. [ MUSIC ] Without it, these Afghans know just how uncertain their future will be.
