## Transcript

Japan warns citizens to brace for 125 mile per hour winds and waves up to 46 feet high. The warning came as typhoon Neoguri made a ferocious pass across the island of Okinawa early Tuesday. This storm, which was downgraded from a super typhoon by the U. S. Navy, is still expected to batter Japan's mainland for the next 48 hours. By the numbers, authorities say one man is dead and up to 10 people are hurt. 600, 000 people have been advised to evacuate shoreline areas. And more than 100, 000 are without power. Another number, 26, 000 is the number of U. S. troops currently stationed at base in Okinawa, Japan's southern most prefecture.

According to the Kadena Air Force base commander, Japan hasn't seen a typhoon like this in 15 years. Sources on the ground confirm the storm's intensity, but there have been mixed reactions over how well provinces like Okinawa have handled the harsh weather. BBC and Hawaii's KHON spoke with sources who said the island's prepared for the worst. The Okinawans and Japanese know typhoons like nobody else. What lock down means is everybody has to go to their home of residence and they're not supposed to leave their house under any situation, any circumstance. It seems like it's getting worse right now.

I actually don't have any electricity right now. I feel pretty calm, I feel prepared I feel safe. It's not a problem. However, CNN's Bill Ripley wasn't as optimistic. We know of at least one building collapse on Okinawa. And keep in mind, this is an island with buildings that are built to withstand typhoon force winds. That's very unusual for Okinawa and a sign of the intensity of this storm. According the The Weather Channel, satellite imagery showed the heart of the storm passed west of Okinawa. But still maintained winds at more than 100 miles per hour. Going forward, Typhoon Neoguri's expected to shrink as it heads north and reaches mainland Japan.

Even as the storm weakens, meteorologists worry heavy rains could cause mudslides in the region already soaked by summer monsoons. I'm Lauren Gores. Thanks for watching.
