Six months ago, Tahrir became synonymous with the uprising that toppled the 30 year dictatorship of President Hosni Mubarak. [ SOUND ] But it has also been the epicenter of the youth- led protest movement that has spurred subsequent reforms. Liberal youth have been staging a sit- in here for weeks in hopes of pressuring Egypt's military leaders to speed up the pace of change. [ FOREIGN ] Friday's demonstration yielded the largest showing of protesters since the sit- in began on July 8th. Most of the thousands who poured into Tahrir on Friday were Islamists. Some responded to calls by the Muslim brotherhood. Egypt's most popular political group. Others cited allegiance to recently empowered fundamentalist groups known as Salafis. [ FOREIGN ] But one thing is clear, their voices are loud and they know how to mobilize. I think a lot of Egyptians support Egypt to be an Islamist state and I support, I myself support Egypt to be a Islamic state, but not the fundamentalist. Liberals say they had planned for the demonstration to serve as a show of national unity, but protestors were anything but unified. What resulted may be a better show of the force that liberal groups will have to reckon with in Egypt's first real democratic elections this fall. [ FOREIGN ].
