A California School District under fire for asking students to argue whether the Holocaust actually happened has decided to cancel the controversial assignment. Eighth graders at the Rialto Unified School District were told to write an essay arguing if they believe the Holocaust was an actual event or quote a political scheme to create public emotion. KCAL obtained a copy of the assignment which asked eighth graders to write an argumentative essay, based upon cited textual evidence, in which you explain whether or not you believe this was an actual event in history or merely a political scheme created to influence public emotion and gain wealth.

School officials told the San Bernardino Sun the essay was supposed to help students develop critical thinking skills, and teach them about propaganda. But parents say they were anything but pleased when their children brought the assignment home in April. I was horrified and stunned. And I could not believe that this could happen in, in the city that I go to church in. It is a weird question, because it obviously did happen. And the Simon Wiesenthal Center also got wind of the controversy, calling it, quote, Grotesque. And police told KTLA several school officials even received death threats in connection with the assignment.

And that's when officials reportedly decided to pull the plug on the original essay. The school district said in a press release Monday, there was no offensive intent in the crafting of this assignment. We regret that the prompt was misinterpreted. The District will provide additional review of future writing prompts in an effort to ensure appropriate subject matter. Administrators say they plan to strike any references to the Holocaust not occurring from any research assignments in the future. And a spokesperson for the school district says those who organized the assignment will now be required to undergo sensitivity training.
