The airport operations have stabilized in the past few days due to the implementation of a time slot based system to keep a steady flow of arrivals and departures. One plane that arrived Sunday night loaded with volunteer medical personnel was initially scheduled to return empty when the U. S. Embassy promptly requested that it take on Haitian Americans returning home. For those stranded in the city, however, the incoming supplies are nearly inaccessible due impart to the massive traffic jams at gas stations along the main route where prices have risen to nearly $ 12 a gallon. Within the hardest hit areas, living conditions are getting worse by the day. The smell of dead bodies combined with the lack of sanitation for the thousands of refugees has made downtown Haiti a growing health hazard. Just 50 meters from the flattened presidential palace, hundreds of Haitians have set up makeshift tents on concrete in an area with little to no shade. In the 100- degree heat, water especially has become very hard to come by. Many have not had clean drinking water for nearly three days. -[ Foreign Language ] >> This business owner took it upon herself to recover any medical supplies possible from the rubble that once was her pharmacy. >> Back there, the pharmacy was there. We are trying to get us some medicines and to try to pick the most important and try to give it to people, you know. You do not see that we are trying to do that-- to give that guy-- everybody passing by and say, are you selling? Are you selling? I'm not. I'm giving. If I have it, I'll give it to you. >> A few blocks down near the demolished Port- au- Prince cathedral, men draw water for cooking and cleaning from a well that is also used for bathing, making it unsafe to drink. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Across from the well, [ unk ], who lost both his parents and one of his four sons in the quake, shows where he buried the body of his 8- year- old child in concrete and inscribed there the words, " Goodbye, Dickinson. Let your soul be with God ." With the addition of international medical personnel, the Hôpital Universitaire de la Paix and the General Hospital have been seeing patients at a much faster rate with urgent care arrivals being seen within minutes. Monday afternoon, Former President Bill Clinton made a stop at the General Hospital on his tour of the destruction. Back at the airport, refugees await much needed supplies. But despite the short distance to the tarmac, few have been delivered. Here, under our setting sun, a Haitian mother scrapes together what food she has left for her family at the end of a long day in a series of hard days to come.
