## Transcript

>> Hi. Would you like a visit from a therapy dog?

>> Once a week, Frances Pilot brings her dog, Louis, to St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan to visit patients.

>> He's trained. He was trained in school to keep up with the walker or a patient on crutches. So, you see he's walking, he's being very careful.

>> They teach them not to be afraid of hospital equipment like crutches. They also teach him very advanced obedience as well.

>> Good dog.

>> Animal assisted care has been offered at St. Vincent's for more than a decade and is becoming more popular nationwide. Though following guidelines is critical for safety, research shows pet therapy can have many health benefits.

>> I've had a study [ unk ] can low your blood pressure by ten points. Eight points [ unk ]. And I think the patient is just something different, they don't expect to see it.

>> Hi, baby.

>> Yeah. Good boy, Louis. Yeah, you have him. That's right.

>> You know, I've seen a lot of people who have been really depressed or sort of angry a lot and wants the therapy dog is coming right to the people. You know, and that's nice to see, you know, it helps them sort of, you know, it's hard, you can't be angry with dog. You can't.

>> For all the joy Louis brings, Frances says he's lucky to be here. Nine years ago, she rescued him from a shelter.

>> Louis' story is that he was at the center for animal care and control. He was not in an irregular adaption anymore, he was in the hospital and I think he most probably would have been euthanized.

>> On his last visit at the afternoon, he stops by Susan Dorothy's room.

>> I'm so happy to meet you. Yeah. I'm gonna have a test soon, so this is very helpful, don't you know that?

>> To become really aware when you have a rescued dog that becomes a therapy dog of how many dogs lives, of really sweet dogs are just thrown away and their potential is never realized. I'm a very proud mother. I'm a very proud Jewish mother. It's as though I have a son who's a doctor. Wonderful.

>> I'm Natasha Del Toro for TIME. com.
