## Transcript

>> I'm Gilbert Cruz with Time, and I'm here with a man who has too many credits to list, the founder of the Sundance Institute and Film Festival, actor, producer, conservationist, and director of the new civil war drama, The Conspirator, Robert Redford. Thank you for being with us today.

>> Thank you for that introduction.

>> This year marks the 150th anniversary of the starting of the civil war, a time when our nation was very divided, are we still a nation divided in some way?

>> We are, sadly. The phrase that Lincoln used to pull the nation together, which was, you know, " A nation divided cannot stand ", well I believe that. We saw how hard it was for him to that, we saw what the costs were. Unfortunately, those circumstances happened completely gone away with time and history. The frame for the film, which of course is the union of this country, the assassination of its president. That frame is a frame that's well known and well understood. Inside of that frame is the trial-- around the story that no-- very few people know, if anyone, which is the trial of Mary Surratt.

>> How do you plead?

>> I am innocent.

>> And the lawyer who is forced to represent her, who happen to be a union soldier.

>> You're so blind with hatred Mr. Aiken, you can't even see the truth.

>> That relationship has evolved in the arc of the two characters, is to me where the real storytelling would exist. The parallels that exist between today with Guantanamo, the habeas corpus issue, those are parallels that's up to the audience or critics to find out. That's not for me to tell 'cause it tells itself.

>> Was there a point earlier in your career perhaps when you thought that you could control what an audience took away from a film.

>> I think I believe when I was younger I thought well maybe if this film has some kind of impact, it could change the way people feel about that issue. No, I don't think, I don't think film changes anyone's mind except maybe in fashion. So I'm not expecting that. I did though at one time to be honest with you. I thought well maybe The Candidate will affect young people. It was the year the 18- year- old vote.

>> What do we do now?

>> Wait a minute, wait a minute.

>> What?

>> Maybe the point of the film which was that we select people by cosmetics, not substance, maybe that'll get through and they will demand more of their candidates and then we got Dan Quayle. I'm sure he's a good guy, but I don't think, you know, heaviest block on the road. So it's gotten worse.

>> What do you tell actors? What do you tell James McAvoy or Danny Houston when you're on set? As an actor, what can you impart to them that other directors wouldn't be able to?

>> I don't think you say a whole lot to an actor before you find out who the actor is.

>> Ah- huh.

>> You know, get to know the actor a little bit, let the actor talk, let the actor ask you questions.

>> But Ms. Surratt did your mother--

>> You owe an actor, as a director who's shepherding the story, you owe an actor what you're thinking as well, what the story and how you wanna tell it, and what you want to look and feel it to be, but wait for the actor to do some talking, and once that's done, stop the talk. There is-- talk can get cheap and costly after a while, and then it becomes people hearing themselves talk because they don't have to act. You know, maybe I just keep talking and asking questions and psyching this character. I won't have to get up and do it but you can sense that. If you are an actor yourself, you sense that, oh I see what we're screwing around here so just get up and let's do it.

>> You say you had to, that this is essentially and Indie movie. There was once a period where the civil war as appealing it is to all Americans would have been something that wasn't an Indie movie, how has Hollywood changed?

>> It's a whole different place right now, and it's moving rapidly by the minute. You know, I think it's moving towards internet- web and how that's gonna shape filmmaking, I think it's yet to be fully seen, but Hollywood as we once knew it no longer exists. It's a street. It is becoming more open to independent film but only because they succeeded some of them in making money and because Hollywood is business. That's basically what it is. It all depends on whether the films are gonna make money or not.

>> You're well known for being an environmentalist or conservationist, do you think the administration is doing a good job? Do you think America is doing a good job in, you know, being stewards of what we had left?

>> I have been doing this for almost 40 years, it's always been an uphill battle because of the power of the energy companies, coal, gas, oil. Those are all forms of energy that were hugely successful in building our wealth, our strength, our power, and all that. That's terrific, but in terms of unlimited use of those energy, that time's over, and the planet is all we've got, and it belongs to all of us, so I have a pretty strong feeling about the need to move on to alternative energy.

>> To end with a question about the civil war, you portray Lincoln's assassination but you don't really ever show his face, I was curious as to why you decided not to.

>> His face has been so well covered and I thought if you're trying to be authentic about what it was like in those days, you wanna be realistic, if you try to authenticate his face, you're just never gonna win that one because there's no face like it except the real one and so I decided not to go there because I didn't think that's what the point of the movie.

>> Mr. Redford thank you so much for talking to us.

>> You're welcome.
