## Transcript

Sean, we know that you've written about Ali's influence and just worldwide, I mean, the moments in history that Muhammad Ali was called upon. Freeing hostages in Iran, being there for Nelson Mandela to be released from prison. In what ways did he shape these huge, global events? So many ways. And it all starts with the Vietnam War. You know, Senator Ted Kennedy said. And came out and said listen he, Ali was ahead of public opinion of Vietnam. He came out and opposed the war before lots of people, other people did. So he really kind of shaped not only the times that he lived in more than any other athlete.

Jimmy Carter sent him around on a diplomatic mission to Garner support for the boycott of the 1980 Olympics and he was like wait a second, you know, we're not opposing apartheid in South Africa so he came and backed out. So he wasn't afraid to not, he didn't want to be used as a tool of politicians. And he, you know, took a stand in so many different ways. One of the interesting things, and Sean obviously alluded to it, during the Vietnam War. When I wrote up on Ali last fall, for one of the last cover before this one that we used Neil's photos for, there was a significant response to that from people that still criticize Ali for not going to Vietnam, and I think, it will always be a polarizing issue.

But I think what that illustrated to me how powerful a stand that was to take if it can still incite anger in people decades and decades later. And imagine how hard it was then. And he didn't have to take that stand, which most people don't know. He could have gotten in his Rolls Royce, I think he had two of them then. Taken the family to Canada. He had his passport. And done what so many other people did, young men did, that wanted to avoid the draft. He chose not to. He was advised that he could do that. He'd have been a hero, I think, in Canada. He would've continued fighting. They wouldn't have taken his license to box away in Canada.

You know, and, he would have made millions of dollars. That may have been the best. Three and a half years of his life. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
