It's not an easy language to learn, but Riffat doesn't have a choice. If she does not learn the language in two years, she fears she'll be kicked out of the Netherlands and sent back to Pakistan where she and her family escaped religious persecution 16 years ago. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Even in Pakistan today, living there is more dangerous. Going back there would be very dangerous for us. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Tahir and her family are part of a Muslim minority that is targeted as un- Islamic in Pakistan. The violence has escalated in recent years. So, the family fears for their lives if they have to go back to Pakistan. But the family's safe haven here has also become precarious. Recently, the Netherlands, known for its tolerance, has tightened its immigration laws. As a result, non- citizens like Tahir and her husband are required to pass its tough language and culture test to become Dutch citizens and permanently be allowed to stay in the country. >> You learn fast when you're young, but I don't know how my parents will pass the test. -[ Foreign Language ] >> I would like to learn Dutch, but I am old and I am ill. It's hard. -[ Foreign Language ] >> The current immigration laws are amongst the strictest in Europe. The Dutch politician, Geert Wilders, is strongly supporting laws that favor deporting immigrants if they do not pass the language test. Wilders is known for his anti- Islamic rhetoric like on this TV appearance. >> I try to warn the people in the Netherlands and maybe even abroad, in Western societies, about the actual danger that Islam brings to our society and to our freedom, and that I think there is no European Islam. There is no moderate Islam. Islam is a, as I see it, fascist ideology full of hatred, submission, and anything else that we should fight against. >> Those who agree with Wilders see new immigration laws as a way to preserve Dutch culture. Sociology of Law Professor, Kees Groenendijk, says, these laws are written to keep Muslims out of the country. >> It's basically also vital [ unk ] the policy of de- Islamization of the Netherlands. It will create an enormous fear and it will support all kinds of prejudice. >> Tahir says, she's felt the attitudes towards Muslims change in the past few years. -[ Foreign Language ] >> We have been hearing people say bad things about Muslims. When I am outside, people stare at me because I wear a veil. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Groenendijk says new immigration laws will only further segregate the population. >> If you always have to reckon with the possibilities that you will be expelled, I mean, this doesn't support your integration. >> Integration, however, isn't a high priority for Tahir right now. Learning Dutch will keep her and her family safe, and that is what she's studying for.
