## Transcript

I was. I never had a chance at another line of work. My parents listened to show tunes all the time. And you should also know their first romantic date was at a protest at the Supreme Court in support of affirmative action. So I was always kind of destined to be in this room, too. Um. When other kids had a paper route, I was in charge of registering voters up and down Dyckman Street in Upper Manhattan. Um, we would do toy drives for Three Kings Day. It's just always been a part of of our family's, um, ethos. Um, and, and so that's fundamental to everything we do. Um, from writing In the Heights to Moana to Encanto, I see diversity as the greatest thing we have and the greatest thing we export as a country.

It's a prerequisite for me getting to talk to you here tonight. And so, so at a time when corporations are running scared of die because of the new administration, we're leaning into that. We're rushing into that space and reminding folks that more stories mean better, stories, mean better representation, mean more fun at the theater or at the movies because you're seeing something you've never seen before. Um, when we created the Miranda Family Fund, we wanted to uplift communities with less access. And and really, everything we've done has really been focused on, um, on on getting more artists of color and removing their barriers to entry.

You shouldn't have to spend your 20s writing In the Heights just to get a seat at the table. I want to make it a little easier for the folks behind me and across from me. Um, and, and it's happened very organically from partnerships with the Telsey office to make sure that the people casting the shows look like the people in the shows to co-creating with maestro music, the rise directory, and removing the lie that there aren't talented artists and technicians of color in every part of every part of our theater industry. Um, we're we're looking to just get more and more seats at the table. We have something called the Miranda Family Fellowship, and we provide scholarships, professional training, mentorship opportunities, and full time paid fellowships.

Most of the time, the folks who can afford to get into the theater business can afford that free internship that turns into a paid job. We pay those internships for artists of color so that they can also have seats at the table. Um, and, and, and at a time when immigrants are being vilified more than ever and scapegoated for all the ills of the world. I didn't mean it as an applause line, but it gets the biggest applause in our show, Hamilton, which is celebrating its 10th year. Immigrants. We get the job done. Your Chilean sea bass is next. Thank you for having me. It's an honor to be in this room with you all.
