One year later, the numbers of the legacy of Sandy are still staggering. Here's what you need to know. [ MUSIC ] When Sandy made landfall more than 2, 000, 000 homes and businesses lost power in New York State, including big chunks of New York City. 5. 6 million cubic yards of debris were removed in New York. There were 14, 890 requests from businesses for disaster loan applications. 116, 000 New Jerseyans were displaced or had to evacuate their homes. Three months after Sandy, Congress approved a $ 50 billion relief bill, but only $ 5. 2 billion of that money had been tapped by cities and states by the end of August 2013. 200 New York City residents are still without a home and 41, 000 New Jersey residents are still displaced from their homes. After Sandy, New York and New Jersey are investing to prepare their cities and their coastlines for climate change and severe storms. In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg released a $ 19. 5 billion plan with over 250 recommendations for this city. The New York energy company, Con Edison, intends to invest $ 1 billion dollars in storm protection measures over the next four years. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has proposed a $ 5. 67 billion plan to harden the system. Overall, Sandy was the second most damaging storm in US history after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Because of the severity of last year's storm, the World Meteorological Organization retired the name Sandy and will not use it again for a North Atlantic storm.
