Twenty years of conflict between the Indian Army and Pakistan- trained militants has reached the boiling point this summer. Since June 11th, at least 15 Kashmir's have died in altercation similar to this one. But if you're adolescents like 19- year- old Basharat Bashir Baba are hoping the game of soccer gives them the opportunity to escape this violent region. But these days, even something as simple as football practice comes with great risk. >> We can see the boys killed on the football ground and we use to think oh maybe they will come, they will kill us also. So, it's very hard to go to the practice like this. >> The most recent incident to hit home with Basharat and his teammates came on the opening day of the World Cup when 17- year- old Tufail Mattoo was shot by a tear gas canister on the soccer field. The tragedy has Basharat's coach Marcos Trios questioning whether managing a successful soccer team is worth putting these players in danger. >> So to reach out professional level, they cannot miss practice. They need to practice through the weeks, through the months, through the year. But pushing the boys and asking them to come to the field is very hard for me because anything can happen. >> Marcos has been an unlikely hero to Basharat and his teammates. He arrived here with his family in 2007 to start a football program called the International Sports Academy Trust. Despite the challenges, he coached this team to the highest levels of Kashmir Football. Last year, Marcos and his team won the State Championship in the A Division Soccer League. >> The main thing that's keeping me here is because in only three years so many good things have happened in a very, very bad situation. >> Success in one of the most militarized places in the world does not come easily. Last year, Basharat and two of his teammates have the opportunity of a lifetime. They were selected to train with the Santos Club in Brazil. But Basharat's chance to travel abroad was nearly dashed after he was denied one of his most basic rights-- his passport. >> When the authorities told that you're not able to get passport, I told my father " Why ." And then he told me that, I was involved in the militancy. >> Basharat was just an infant when his father joined Pakistani militants. Yet, he, like thousands of other youth in Kashmir is suffering the consequences. >> 60, 000 cases like Basha are in passport office pending for just for the disposal. Nobody gives them the response. So their future is in the dark. >> In Kashmir, a father's worst fear is that his son will end up here in murder cemetery, the final resting ground for thousands of young people killed during this conflict. But Basharat's father knows soccer maybe he's only way out of this war- torn region. It's a risk he has to take. >> Here in Kashmir since the last 20 years this is a part of our life. If we have to achieve something, if we have to do something here in Kashmir, we have to take these risks. >> Basharat's chance to travel abroad was restored when local officials intervened to get him his passport. He is now waiting on funding for his trip to Brazil. But most days, Basharat and his teammates aren't thinking about things like passports. They're just trying to stay alive. >> I know, I think this one going to practice and not coming to back. So what does-- what then does the passport give us? Nothing. If we have our life, then everything is with us. If we don't have our life, then nothing. >> Like many young soccer players in Kashmmir, Basharat refuses to let go of his dream. >> First dream will be to play for India and then I want to open an academy in Kashmir. That's my dream. >> As these boys continued to chase their dreams by improving their football skills, they can only hope they aren't hampered by passport restrictions and violence, or worst, they become another casualty of the conflict in the region.
