## Transcript

Cold weather has arrived with a vengeance across much of the U. S. And while staying warm is important, it can get expensive. Here are some ways to beat the chill without breaking the bank. First, resist the urge to crank that thermostat and maybe do the opposite if you can handle the cold feet. One investigation of Michigan heating trends showed lowering temperature one degree saved homeowners more than five percent on monthly heating cost. The US Department of Energy recommends winter settings of 70 degrees during the day and 62 degrees when you're asleep or away. It's also worth pointing out there's no monthly fee for bundling up.

It is holiday sweater season after all, and hey, this could start looking pretty tasteful if it saves you some cash. Around the house, use weather stripping to block drafts around your windows and doors. And use curtains you can open during the sunny daylight hours and close to keep the heat in at night. Cold weather is also a perfect excuse to get the furnace cleaned or to install more insulation against the roof. If you go that route the department of Energy has an online calculator for getting an idea of how much you'll need. But again you already have that sweater. Think of the Christmas cards
