[ MUSIC ] HTC has a brand new flagship smartphone. The 1A9 has a five inch screen, a 13 megapixel rear camera and an all metal finish that feels great in the hands. But photos of the new phone leaked early and some were saying, this is just an iPhone rip- off. Let's see how the two phones compare. When HTC showed me and a few other tech journals the A9 recently, they made a big point of saying how this wasn't just an iPhone copy. You can make that decision for yourself. Just look at the two phones side by side. But I'd like to ask, does it even matter. Look, a lot of work goes into designing a smartphone and I totally get that.

But a lot of them look pretty similar from the outside. They're black or silver or rose gold Internet- connected super computers in your pocket. Any hardware differences are usually pretty minor on the outside. People quibble over such small details as where the headphone jack is. That's boring. To me the most interesting thing about smartphones isn't the hardware, it's the software. What can you do with that computer in your pocket. And in that respect, Apple iPhone 6 and HTC's One A9 couldn't be any more different. Apple's iPhone 6 obviously runs iOS, whereas this new ACC phone is on Android.

And those are two very different software experiences. But here's the most important point. Is the Aena any good? I think it is, especially if you're in the market for a high- end Android phone and you don't wanna switch to an iPhone, but Apple's big advantage is that it controls the hardware and the software in the iPhone. Most Android smartphone makers can't say that and that gives Apple a big advantage. [ MUSIC ]
