## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] The countries' most valuable company is continuing to grow exponentially. On December 13th, Apple made waves with it's billion dollar announcement to build a second headquarters in Austin, Texas A 133 acre campus will be built in North Austin and will have space to welcome 5, 000 employees at first but will fit an additional 10, 000 employees after it expands. The new campus will be less than one mile from its existing Austin outpost, which is Apple's biggest location outside Silicon Valley. The upgrades don't stop in Texas. The company is planning to build new sites and add over 1000 employees in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City.

Hundreds of new jobs are expected to be posted in cities like Pittsburgh, New York, and Portland over the next three years. All and all, Apple plans to grow its workforce in the US from 90, 000 to 110, 000 by 2023. Also plans to invest $ 10 billion in US data centers over the next 5 years, including $ 4. 5 billion this year and the next. The move coincides with other tech giants expanding beyond their West Coast roots. Amazon said last month that it would divide its second headquarters between New York and Virginia after a year long beauty contest. and Google is expanding its presence in New York City with a new campus that'll be over 1.

7 million square feet. The tech giant's decision to expand its locale is in response to the increase in competition for engineers in Silicone Valley, which continues to dominate in the world's capital for tech talent. While bidding wars for programmers has driven salaries higher, the high cost of living in San Francisco has made tech workers want to move elsewhere. Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. Talent, creativity and tomorrow's breakthrough ideas aren't limited by region or zip code. For years Apple has been criticized for not doing enough for the American economy. Since it makes most of it's products in China.

And skirts U. S. taxes by keeping most of it's profits abroad. And the iPhone maker has faced sharp criticism by the President to manufacture more in the United States. But the company's latest announcement has the tech giant living up to its January promise to invest more than $ 30 billion in the United States. While it's unsurprising that growing tech giants are racing to scale a competitive work force, the tech industry's latest investments reflect an increasing importance to the American economy as historic employers like General Motors cut thousands of jobs.
